If you’re keen to embrace a zero-waste lifestyle, we have created a list of 6 eco-friendly items you’ll need to get started. Some of these you might already own, some you can borrow and others you will need to buy (however, we suggest searching for it at secondhand shops before buying it brand new to reduce your carbon footprint!).

Let’s get started:

1. Reusable shopping bags
It is estimated that the average plastic bag takes a minimum of 15 years to decompose – shocking! Say no to plastic bags and bring your own. When you BYO bags, you can sleep easy knowing that they won’t end up in landfill or in our oceans where they may end up wrapped around an animals’ neck or in their digestive systems.

2. Reusable cup
Whether you’re an avid coffee or tea drinker, a reusable cup will fit into your life perfectly. You’ll also reduce your waste by saying no to disposable take-away cups and some cafes even give you a discount if you do. Just don’t forget to take your reusable cup with you next time you step out!

3. Food storage containers
This is a perfect example of a zero-waste investment. Some people argue the costs that come with embracing a zero-waste lifestyle and while they may be right, the beauty of it is that they will only need to be purchased once… and that’s it – it’s yours for the rest of your life!

Food storage containers are perfect for packing your children’s lunch, take-away meals and taking home restaurant leftovers. They’re also super stylish and functional!

4. Reusable straw
Straws are a luxury for some and a necessity for others. We don’t all need them – many people can actually live without them (lips are made for drinking after all!). For some however, straws are required due to physical limitations and disabilities. But if you are able-bodied and prefer to drink with a straw, switch to a metal, bamboo or glass straw so you can do your part to reduce single-use plastic waste.

5. Reusable safety razor

This is another zero-waste investment. But think about never having to buy another razor again! Ahh… that already sounds so good. Traditional safety razors are made from stainless steel and have metal blades that can be recycled. When thinking long-term, this is definitely the more cost-effective option!

6. Bar soaps
Whether you’re searching for a shampoo, conditioner, body soap, face cleanser, body exfoliator or beard shampoo, we guarantee there is already a bar soap version of it! Bar soaps are a great zero-waste product to add to your bathroom routine – most of them already come package-free or in minimal packaging!
