Furoshiki is simply a style of gift wrapping and a traditional Japanese wrapping cloth. Furoshiki truly embraces the philosophy of eco-friendly living by challenging us on how many items we really need. You can accomplish a lot with just wrapping and tying. We never knew that gifts could look so beautiful and what better way to celebrate the gift of giving with hand-wrapped gifts?Â
The Basic Wrap: For square or rectangle-shaped giftsÂ
- Place your gift in the center of the furoshikiÂ
- Take two opposite corners and fold them over the gift in the centerÂ
- Take the remaining opposite corners and tie them into a knot above the folded-over cornersÂ
The Corner TieÂ
- Lay furoshiki wrap (with the side you want on the outside) facing down and place the gift on an angle to the corners of the fabricÂ
- Fold one corner over the giftÂ
- Fold the adjacent corner over the gift, folding and tucking the edge so it lines up neatly with the edge of the fabric. (Your furoshiki wrap should now be in the shape of a triangle)Â
- With the long side of the fabric, fold in 2-3 times (depending on size of fabric) until the folded edge meets with the edge of the gift insideÂ
- Twist the remaining fabric anticlockwiseÂ
- Holding the two twisted corners, bring them together over the corner of the gift and tie a knot. Tuck the edges of the tie under the fabric is necessaryÂ
The Carry Bag WrapÂ
- Lay furoshiki wrap (with the side you want on the outside) facing down and place gift/s in the center of fabric
- Take two adjacent corners and tie once or twice into a secure knotÂ
- Repeat with the remaining adjacent cornersÂ
The Wine Bottle WrapÂ
- Lay furoshiki wrap (with the side you want on the outside) facing down and place bottle in the center of fabricÂ
- Take two opposite corners of the wrap and tie one or twice above the bottle cap
- Twist remaining opposite corners around the bottle and secure by tying a knot at the front or back of the bottleÂ
- Return to the knot at the top of the bottle. Twist the loose fabric, leaving 3-4 cm of the corner free to tie into a secure knot for the handleÂ
The Double Wine Bottle Wrap
1. Lay furoshiki wrap (with the side you want on the outside) facing down with the corner pointing at you.
2. Place bottles standing up. Align bottles so they are directly in front of you (i.e. beside each other)
3. Gently place bottles down so the top of the bottles are facing the left and right corners of fabric.
4. Take corner (closest to you) and roll over the bottles. Continue rolling until the furthest corner has been rolledÂ
5. Carefully grab the left and right corners to stand bottles uprightÂ
6. Tie loose corners into a knot above bottlesÂ
