The holiday season is fast approaching. And with every holiday season comes a lot of food and drinks! Unfortunately, when considering food packaging and decoration, there is often a lot of waste! This year, we have some tips to help you have an eco-friendly Thanksgiving.

Purchase products in environmentally-friendly packaging

When grocery shopping, opt for food that is environmentally packaged in cardboard boxes, glass jars and glass bottles. Better yet, hit up your local farmer’s market or local bulk food store – don’t forget to bring your own produce and shopping bags!

Rethink your turkey

Remember – Shop local and organic. Instead of buying the cheapest turkey to feed your family and friends, find a market near you and choose an organic pasture-raised turkey that was sustainably and ethically bred. And by supporting local, you are helping create more jobs and grow local economies.

Decorate with nature

Forget petroleum-based plastics and synthetic decorations! Adorn your table with natural and homemade decorations – pumpkins, leaves, pine cones and branches. These are all natural options which are compostable and biodegradable!

Use real plates and silverware

Not only do ceramic dishes and silverware look and feel better than their plastic counterparts, it also helps to cut down a large amount of plastic waste! We know how big your Thanksgiving parties can be – all the aunties, uncles, cousins and their partners! If you do not have enough dishes for every family member, choose biodegradable plates and cutlery to reduce your impact on our environment.

Eat green

Locally sourced organic products are always better for our ecosystem. Make it a habit to source all your ingredients from local and organic stores. Not only does it help you eat seasonally and support your local producer, it also helps you stay away from imported produce where chemical fertilisers may have been used!

Say Thank You

Last but not least, tell your guests and the people you care about how much you care about them, and how they have helped to make the world a better place. After all, that’s what Thanksgiving is all about, right? Sometimes, all it takes is to plant a seed in their mind before they follow in your eco-friendly footsteps too!
