It’s that time of the year again where we say goodbye to 2019, and hello to 2020! Most of us have certain goals we wish to accomplish or challenges we hope to face in the New Year, but do any of your goals allow you to be a positive change towards our environment? Here are six eco-friendly resolutions to help inspire you and help make a difference in our world:

Refuse plastic water bottles

Did you know that a staggering one million plastic bottles are purchased every minute around the world? Plastic bottles do more harm than good by needlessly floating around our oceans and landfill, and by harming innocent wildlife. Purchase a reusable bottle and never have to buy bottled water again!

Carry reusable bags every time you go shopping

Plastic bags are often consumed by innocent wildlife, causing harm and even death! Carry reusable shopping and produce bags with you to reduce your impact on the environment. Tip: Keep a set of bags in your car, your handbag, your office drawer or wherever you think you’re likely to go for a shop! This way, reusable bags will always be within reach.

Start composting!

Composting is an incredible way to give back to the planet. Do you have a compost garden or bin? Perfect! From grass clippings and tree leaves to vegetable peels and cardboard, composting helps to reduce waste, strengthen your soil, promote healthy plant growth and reduce the need for pesticides/synthetic fertilisers, simply by putting essential nutrients back into the soil.

Shop local where possible

While there are plenty of convenience stores and big chain supermarkets left, right and center, make an effort to shop locally – it’s better for the environment and your community. There are also some personal benefits too! By shopping at your local grocer or farmer’s market, you will get to meet the people behind the business and get fresher produce!

Buy secondhand

Be it clothing, handbags, home décor or kitchenware… get it secondhand! We love visiting our local market – if you’re lucky, you will find some real gems! Not only will you be making an eco-friendly purchase, you’ll also be saving money at the same time!

Rethink your mode of transportation

Do you find yourself driving everywhere? This year, make an effort to walk more, cycle more, take public transport or even carpool to decrease your carbon footprint. This way, you will be saving money and integrating fitness into your day – two birds, one stone!
